Books currently shaping Dr. Byron Ernest’s thinking on leadership, culture, and growth.
Why I'm reading it:
George MacDonald offers profound spiritual insights and moral reflections that can deeply enrich any leader's perspective. I want to further develop a greater sense of empathy, humility, and ethical integrity in order to be an even more impactful leader. MacDonald’s poetic and thought-provoking style inspires me to approach challenges with wisdom, resilience, and a deeper understanding of human nature. Engaging with MacDonald's work can nurture a more holistic, thoughtful, and values-driven leadership approach.
For 2026 I have chosen George MacDonald’s Diary of an Old Soul, Annotated Edition (2024) to guide my daily devotion and study time. MacDonald first self-published these poems (one for every day) in 1880. I have become a fan and student of George MacDonald because of my deep studies of C. S. Lewis. Lewis was deeply influenced by MacDonald at the age of 16 when he purchased a copy of Phantastes.
The epic storytelling of C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien in fantasy settings can inspire perseverance and hope during challenging times, fostering resilience. It also offers a symbolic space to explore themes like power, sacrifice, and morality, helping readers reflect on ethical choices. Overall, such stories serve as valuable resources for developing strategic, moral, and emotional intelligence. These are all essential qualities for effective leadership.
I am reading The Hobbit because it offers valuable lessons in courage, leadership, and perseverance. The story follows Bilbo Baggins as he embarks on an unexpected journey filled with challenges, requiring him to step out of his comfort zone and develop resourcefulness, humility, and resilience. These themes are highly relevant to leadership, reminding us that effective leaders must be adaptable, courageous in the face of uncertainty, and willing to embrace change. Additionally, The Hobbit highlights the importance of collaboration, trust, and maintaining a sense of wonder and curiosity. These qualities inspire leaders to motivate their teams and navigate complex situations with wisdom and integrity.
